The Toronto Blue Jays are headed to the postseason for the first time since 2016.

Toronto booked its ticket with a 4-1 victory against the New York Yankees on Thursday night. It marks the third playoff appearance for the franchise since 1993.

The Blue Jays (30-27) still have a chance to overtake the 32-25 Yankees for second place in the American League East and improve their seeding.

Hyun-Jin Ryu earned the playoff-clinching victory at Sahlen Field in Buffalo. He's in his first season with the club after signing a four-year, $80-million contract and has authored a 2.69 ERA and 3.00 FIP over 12 starts this year.

"I knew the postseason was a possibility," Ryu said following the game on why he chose Toronto in free agency, according to Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun. "I like winning and I came here to win."

The Blue Jays are the seventh AL team to clinch a postseason berth, with the second-place spot in the West still up for grabs between the Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners, and Los Angeles Angels.
