The San Diego Padres will likely be without their star closer for the rest of the season, as Kirby Yates is expected to undergo a procedure to remove bone chips from his elbow, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Yates, 33, got a second opinion Monday in Dallas from Dr. Keith Meister. The procedure requires a recovery time of at least six weeks, which would sideline the right-hander until just after the regular season - slated to end Sept. 27.

When asked if he could envision Yates pitching again this season, Padres manager Jayce Tingler said, "it would be tough," Acee adds.

Yates was originally placed on the 10-day injured list Aug. 15 after leaving a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks due to discomfort in his elbow.

The 2019 All-Star authored a 1.19 ERA and 1.30 FIP over 60 2/3 innings last year while notching a league-leading 41 saves. He's had a rough 2020 campaign, though, allowing six runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out eight over 4 1/3 innings.
