Hall of Famer Wade Boggs had an apparent bout with pneumonia last month but wonders if it may have actually been the coronavirus.

"About the beginning of March, I had pneumonia and just three days of high fever and cough and all that good stuff," Boggs told Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times. "I went to the hospital and tested negative for flu, but I had pneumonia. I'm curious to find the antibody test and see if I actually did have (COVID-19)."

The 61-year-old, who added that the recovery was "a really rough few days," acts as an ambassador for the Boston Red Sox and believes left-hander Chris Sale could have passed the virus to him during a visit to spring training camp.

"Various players were around, and I wound up having a lengthy conversation and shaking hands with Chris Sale," Boggs continued. "I was asking him, 'How was your pneumonia?' and he says, 'It was killing me' kind of thing. He got that in the beginning of February so I'm wondering when they do his antibody test whether or not it comes back that he had it."

Earlier in April, Sale mused on whether his pneumonia, which slowed his progression in spring, stemmed from COVID-19. Sale did admit it's unlikely, based on the fact that he seemingly didn't pass it on to his family or community members once he was sent home from camp.

Boggs began his 18-year career with Boston, playing 11 seasons with the Red Sox. He was named to eight All-Star rosters and won six Silver Sluggers.
