Report: A's, Mets checked in on veteran catcher Martin

The Oakland Athletics and New York Mets are among teams that have checked in on free-agent catcher Russell Martin, reports Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

Though the veteran backstop has reportedly turned down a few offers in order to prioritize a family situation, he apparently still wants to play.

The 37-year-old spent the 2019 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers following an offseason trade with the Toronto Blue Jays. In 83 games, he hit .220/.337/.330 with six home runs and 20 RBIs.

Martin, a four-time All-Star, hasn't appeared in more than 100 games in a season since 2016 - his second in Toronto.

He was also a key contributor for the 2015 Blue Jays as they returned to the postseason for the first time since 1993.

Over parts of 14 years between the Dodgers, Blue Jays, Pittsburgh Pirates, and New York Yankees, Martin has hit .248/.349/.397 with 191 home runs, 771 RBIs, and 101 stolen bases.
