Report: Padres willing to attach prospects to Myers in trade talks

The San Diego Padres are looking to deal outfielder Wil Myers and may be willing to sweeten the pot. The Padres are open to attaching prospects to Myers if it helps them complete a deal, according to Jayson Stark of The Athletic.

Myers is signed through the 2022 season and is set to earn $20 million in each of the next three seasons. He also has a $20-million team option with a $1-million buyout for 2023, according to Cot's Baseball Contracts.

Under a mandate to succeed or else "heads will roll," general manager A.J. Preller may be forced to sacrifice talent from one of baseball's top farm systems. San Diego has five players listed among MLB Pipeline's Top 100 prospects even after Fernando Tatis Jr., Chris Paddack, and Cal Quantrill graduated last season.

There is no word yet on which prospects may be made available in a theoretical Myers trade.

After a promising start to his Padres tenure, Myers has struggled. Over the last two seasons, he's hit .245 with a .749 OPS, 29 home runs and 29 stolen bases in 238 games.

The Padres don't have an obvious fit for Myers in the starting lineup following their recent acquisitions of Tommy Pham and Trent Grisham. The 28-year-old has dabbled at the corner infield positions, but San Diego is set with Eric Hosmer at first and Manny Machado at third.
