Anthony Rendon is set to command a healthy contract in free agency, but the specifics remain up in the air entering Major League Baseball's annual winter meetings.
Agent Scott Boras is asking suitors to submit bids in the seven-year range, sources told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. That type of deal would carry Rendon through his age-36 season, which contradicts his apparent plan to retire by 35.
Still, plans change, and Rendon could get a contract that exceeds Nolan Arenado's $234-million extension with the Colorado Rockies.
So far this offseason, Rendon has been linked to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, and Texas Rangers.
The Nationals have also been interested in retaining Rendon, but are more confident in re-signing right-handed starter Stephen Strasburg, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.
Rendon, 29, is the most coveted position player on the market after a top-three NL MVP finish in 2019 when he hit .319/.412/.598 with 34 home runs. Over parts of seven seasons with the Nationals, Rendon owns a .290 batting average with .859 OPS in 916 games while also serving as a solid defender at third base.
