Mets' deGrom wins 2nd consecutive NL Cy Young
For the second straight year, the Baseball Writers' Association of America has named New York Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom the National League Cy Young Award winner. He's the first Mets pitcher to claim the honor in consecutive seasons and the 20th pitcher in MLB history to win multiple Cy Youngs.
Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu received a single first-place vote, preventing deGrom from winning unanimously.
Pitcher | Team | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | Points |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Jacob deGrom | NYM | 29 | 1 | 207 | |
Hyun-Jin Ryu | LAD | 1 | 10 | 8 | 88 |
Max Scherzer | WSH | 8 | 8 | 72 | |
Jack Flaherty | STL | 5 | 11 | 69 | |
Stephen Strasburg | WSH | 6 | 1 | 53 |
Note: The BBWAA issued a correction. Initially, Ryu and Scherzer were listed as tied for second.
Though he was more dominant in his 2018 campaign, deGrom was consistently great in 2019. Overall, he went 11-8 with a 2.43 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP, and an NL-leading 255 strikeouts across 204 innings.
It's the fourth time deGrom has finished in the top 10 in Cy Young Award voting during his six-year career.
Ryu rode his first career All-Star season to his spot as a Cy Young finalist after leading all qualified starters with a 2.32 ERA over 182 2/3 innings in 29 starts. He was particularly sharp in the season's opening half, going 10-2 with a 1.73 ERA.
Though Scherzer was limited to 172 1/3 innings (his fewest since 2009) in 2019, he was outstanding on the mound. He finished 11-7 with a 2.92 ERA, a 1.03 WHIP, and 243 strikeouts across 27 starts.
