New skipper Beltran 'can't wait to rewrite' Mets' story

The New York Mets introduced new manager Carlos Beltran on Monday.

Beltran played parts of seven seasons in Queens, making five All-Star teams during that time. However, the closest those Mets clubs came to winning it all was when New York pushed the St. Louis Cardinals to seven games in the 2006 National League Championship Series.

The 42-year-old is looking to make up for that relative failure.

"I just can't wait to rewrite our story," Beltran told reporters.

Beltran was traded to the San Francisco Giants in 2011 for then-prospect Zack Wheeler, who was issued a qualifying offer from the Mets on Monday. Beltran says any conflict with the organization is now water under the bridge.

Beltran, wearing the same No. 15 he donned as a player, joins a Mets club that hasn't won a championship since 1986 despite making World Series appearances in 2000 and 2015.

The new skipper said he received several messages of support from former teammates such as Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, and Pedro Martinez, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

"They were very happy and excited," Beltran said. "I received so much love."

Since losing the 2015 World Series against the Kansas City Royals, the Mets have gone 320-328 and appeared in a lone playoff game.
