Washington previously managed for the Texas Rangers from 2007-14. A.J. Preller worked with the Rangers during Washington's tenure before becoming general manager of the Padres.
Jayce Tingler is the other reported finalist for the Padres' managerial role, but Morosi and Cassavell note there are some within the organization in favor of hiring Bruce Bochy should he wish to return for a second stint in San Diego. Tingler also worked with Texas during Preller's time with the club.
The Rangers went 664-611 during Washington's eight-year run, winning back-to-back American League pennants. Near the end of the 2014 campaign, Washington stepped down from his post with Texas citing personal reasons. He returned to the majors as an infield coach for the Oakland Athletics eight months later.
More recently, Washington served as the third base coach for the Atlanta Braves. He was considered to be a finalist for the Braves' managerial role prior to the 2017 season but joined the team as its third base coach once Atlanta hired Brian Snitker.
