Report: DEA interviews Harvey, Heaney in probe of Skaggs' death

Federal agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration have interviewed at least six players in the course of their investigation into the death of Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs, reports Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times, citing sources.

Skaggs' Angels teammates Matt Harvey, Noe Ramirez, Andrew Heaney, and Trevor Cahill were among those interviewed, a source told DiGiovanna. A representative for Cahill confirmed the DEA questioned the right-hander in September. Harvey, who finished the season in the Oakland Athletics organization, was released by the Angels in July.

The names of the other players questioned are not known. The players interviewed were reportedly not being specifically targeted, suspected of using opiates, or otherwise implicated in criminal activity.

Skaggs was found dead in a Texas hotel room on July 1. Autopsy results later showed he died as a result of "terminal aspiration of gastric contents" and had the opioids fentanyl and oxycodone in his system in addition to alcohol.

It was reported Saturday that the Angels were aware of Skaggs' drug use in 2017. Angels director of communications Eric Kay told DEA agents he abused oxycodone with Skaggs for years and had revealed as much to former Angels vice president of communications Tim Mead in 2017.
