The American League Championship Series between the Houston Astros and New York Yankees moved to the Bronx for the first time Tuesday, and Josh Reddick wasn't pleased with the reception. More specifically, the Astros right fielder took exception to fans throwing things onto the field.
"There's no place in the game for that type of thing," Reddick told Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY. "I think I saw seven or eight water bottles out in the outfield, and two souvenir baseballs thrown from center field to left. It's scary.
"I don't think a lot of people realize how scary that can really be. You throw a baseball hard enough, hit somebody in the head when we're not looking, it can do some damage to you as a player. ... It's frustrating to see that as a player in the outfield. ... It's definitely disrespectful, and at the same time, very unsafe."
The PA announcer at Yankee Stadium warned fans that throwing objects on the field could result in ejections after Astros manager A.J. Hinch informed the umpiring crew of the abuse Reddick was facing.
Reddick hit a home run in the second inning of Game 3, helping Houston to a 4-1 win and a 2-1 ALCS lead. The series is slated to continue Wednesday in New York, though forecasts of inclement weather could jeopardize that.
