Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout is scheduled to undergo surgery to remove the Morton's neuroma in his right foot later this week, the team announced Sunday.
Manager Brad Ausmus told reporters Trout will not play again this season, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The 28-year-old has been sidelined with a foot ailment since Sept. 7, and the pain was still present prior to Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Morton's neuroma is a condition that develops at the ball of the foot and can cause sharp, burning pain as well as numbness of the toes. On Sept. 9, Trout underwent a cryoablation procedure to address the neuroma.
The eight-time All-Star authored a .291/.438/.645 slash line and slugged a career-high 45 home runs - which leads the American League.
Heading into September, Trout was the prohibitive favorite to win AL MVP. However, this news could potentially open the door for Alex Bregman, who entered Sunday 1.3 WAR behind Trout, according to FanGraphs.
