Right-hander Luis Severino will join the New York Yankees this weekend and is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Los Angeles Angels, manager Aaron Boone said, according to ESPN.
The two-time All-Star has yet to pitch for the Yankees in 2019 due to injuries after becoming a fixture atop the rotation over the previous two seasons.
The 25-year-old Severino was sidelined in spring training with a shoulder injury before an unrelated lat strain further delayed his recovery.
While the Yankees have cruised to the top of the AL East this year, starting pitching has been a concern, as the rotation ranks 17th in the majors with a 4.62 ERA.
Boone is eager to get his ace back into the fold.
"No question we're excited to get him back," Boone said. "I feel like he's been in a pretty good place physically now for a couple of months and building really good momentum. I feel like his progression has gone really smooth.
"He could be a game-changer guy for us, there's no question."
Since the beginning of 2017, Severino has gone 33-14 with a 3.18 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP, and 450 strikeouts in 384 2/3 innings while finishing in the top 10 in Cy Young Award voting in back-to-back seasons.
