The St. Louis Cardinals traded utility man Jedd Gyorko to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for left-handed reliever Tony Cingrani and minor-league righty Jeffry Abreu, the team announced Wednesday.
Gyorko is currently on the 60-day injured list with a lower back strain, though he is "close to 100 percent healthy," sources told J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group.
The 30-year-old was hitting .196/.274/.304 with two homers and two steals over 38 games before landing on the IL.
Prior to this season, the infielder was one of the steadiest players on the Cardinals. He authored a .794 OPS (111 OPS+) over 378 games from 2016-18 while spending time at second base, third base, shortstop, and first base.
However, the recent play of Tommy Edman at third base and the impending return of Matt Carpenter made Gyorko expendable.
Gyorko has a $13-million team option next year, which includes a $1-million buyout if the Dodgers don't exercise it.
Heading back the other way, the 30-year-old Cingrani has made eight appearances this year, all in the minor leagues. In 2018, the lefty posted a 4.76 ERA and a 2.32 FIP with the Dodgers over 22 2/3 innings.
In addition, Abreu, 19, has thrown 19 1/3 inning in rookie ball, authoring a 4.66 ERA and a 4.23 FIP.
