Speaking publicly for the first time since Boston Red Sox southpaw David Price tore into him Wednesday, Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley said he hasn't been able to escape questions surrounding the seemingly never-ending feud between the two.
"He's my new Kirk Gibson," he told Dan Shaughnessy of The Boston Globe on Saturday. "Everywhere I go, people are asking me about David Price, telling me what he said about me. For years, I carried the Gibson thing around. Everybody was dropping a Gibson on me. Now I got this. I don't get it."
Eckersley famously served up a walk-off home run to Gibson in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series and has been linked to the moment since.
The discord between Price and Eckersley began in 2017 when the pair got into a disagreement on one of the team's charter flights over a comment the latter made during a broadcast.
Eckersley is in Cooperstown, N.Y., this weekend for the Hall of Fame induction ceremony. He's expected to return to the broadcast booth next week in St. Petersburg, Fla., when the Red Sox face the Tampa Bay Rays in a three-game set.
