Nearly a week after Jonathan Lucroy sustained a broken nose and a concussion in a home-plate collision with Houston Astros outfielder Jake Marisnick, the Los Angeles Angels catcher admitted he can barely recall the event that resulted in him losing consciousness.
"The last thing I remember was reaching for the ball," Lucroy said, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times. "The next thing I remember was being put on the cart."
Speaking with reporters Friday, Lucroy said he's feeling fine physically, according to Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times. He also said this concussion - the third of his career - isn't even the worst one that he's sustained.
Lucroy added that he didn't think Marisnick, who was suspended two games for the collision, intended any harm, but said the lack of intent doesn't excuse the end result.
"In a situation like that, split-second decisions need to be made," he said, according to DiGiovanna. "I don't think he was trying to hurt anybody. However, I gave him the whole (outside) lane. That's what I told him in a text message."
The Angels placed Lucroy on the seven-day injured list for concussions on Friday, retroactive to July 9, though there's no specific timetable for his return. As a corresponding move, the club reinstated catcher Kevan Smith from the injured list.
