The Chicago White Sox have designated first baseman/designated hitter Yonder Alonso for assignment in his first year with the club, a source told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
The move is expected to be announced by the club on Friday, Feinsand added.
Alonso was acquired in a December trade with the Cleveland Indians. In 67 games with the White Sox, he hit .178/.275/.301 with seven home runs and 27 RBIs.
The 32-year-old was in the final season of a two-year, $16-million contract that also included a team option for 2020.
Last offseason, some viewed Chicago's acquisition of Alonso as a play for star free agent Manny Machado. Machado is Alonso's brother-in-law, and the White Sox were considered a front-runner before the infielder signed a 10-year deal with the San Diego Padres.
Alonso has amassed 97 home runs over parts of 10 seasons, with a career-best 28 coming in his 2017 All-Star campaign split between the Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners.
