Cubs' Epstein: 'Door is open' for Zobrist to play again in 2019
The Chicago Cubs could get veteran Ben Zobrist back this season after all.
Team president Theo Epstein said on Thursday that Zobrist is welcome to return when he's ready.
"There's been a little definition added to how he hopes this thing might go," Epstein said, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN. "I've been in constant touch with Zobrist. He knows the door is open. I think he's got an idea in mind on how he would like this to go, but his priorities are clear - that's family first."
The 38-year-old has been on the restricted list since May 7 for personal reasons. Zobrist and his wife Julianna later filed for divorce.
Though the Cubs would welcome him back, Zobrist's return isn't guaranteed.
"Nothing has been determined," Epstein said.
Zobrist is in the final season of a four-year contract with Chicago. The three-time All-Star has hit .269/.362/.412 with 39 home runs and 194 RBIs in 440 games since joining the club prior to the 2016 season.
In 2016, he earned World Series MVP honors after hitting .357 in the series, helping end the Cubs' 108-year championship drought.
