A New York Yankees jersey worn by Babe Ruth is expected to set a new sports memorabilia record when it hits the auction block this weekend.
The jersey, which dates back to the 1920s and is from the Sultan of Swat's private family collection, has the team name printed across its front - a rare feature - and "Ruth" stitched on the inside of the collar. It will be auctioned off at Yankee Stadium on Saturday along with hundreds of other Ruth-related items.
SGC, a leading company for trading card grading and uniform authentication, has graded the jersey as "excellent/superior" and expects it to bring in more than $4.5 million.
"This Babe Ruth jersey may prove to be the most valuable piece of sports memorabilia ever," SGC CEO Dave Forman said.
The record for the highest-priced piece of sports memorabilia currently belongs to another Ruth jersey that sold for more than $4.4 million in 2012.
