The Toronto Blue Jays haven't promoted top prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to the big-league club, but it appears that it's only a matter of time before the 20-year-old slugger makes his major-league debut.
"Our sense is it's sooner rather than later," general manager Ross Atkins said, according to Melissa Couto of The Canadian Press. "For a player that has played as much as he has, that's had as much success as he's had, now it's about getting built up and getting into regular-season form and being hopefully ready to make a debut at some point soon."
While the day Blue Jays fans have been dreaming of is inching closer, there still isn't a definitive date to circle on the calendar for his inevitable arrival. Still, once he's up, Atkins wants him to stay up.
"There are some other variables to that - we want to make sure that we get everything we can out of the minor leagues to ensure there never is a day that we're ever considering the minor leagues again."
An oblique strain ended Guerrero's spring training prematurely, delaying his first Triple-A game this year until Thursday. He went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, a walk, four RBIs, and a stolen base.
The most highly touted offensive player yet to play in the majors is coming off a season where he slashed .381/.437/.636 with 20 home runs, 29 doubles, and 78 RBIs in 95 games across four minor-league levels.
