Report: Mets' deGrom lands record $9.6M raise in arbitration

The New York Mets and their NL Cy Young winner have avoided arbitration as right-hander Jacob deGrom has reportedly agreed to a one-year, $17-million deal, according to Jon Heyman of Fancred.

DeGrom made $7.4 million last season, making his year-to-year raise $9.6 million - a league record.

The new one-year deal broke an hours-old record after Mookie Betts and the Boston Red Sox reportedly agreed to a one-year, $20-million deal that earned the AL MVP a $9.5-million raise from his $10.5-million salary in 2018.

DeGrom had a career year, earning the 2018 NL Cy Young by a near-unanimous vote after authoring a 1.70 ERA and 1.99 FIP over 217 innings pitched. The right-hander also finished fifth in NL MVP voting, earning one first-place vote.

The 31-year-old has one more year of arbitration remaining next winter before becoming eligible for free agency prior to the 2021 season. Josh Donaldson set the all-time record for salary earned under arbitration, signing a $23-million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays last winter.
