Report: Mets 'very aggressive' on Marlins' Realmuto
The New York Mets want catcher J.T. Realmuto and are trying to acquire him from the Miami Marlins as the winter meetings progress.
The Mets are being "very aggressive" in trade talks and are debating whether to center a package around young shortstop Amed Rosario or star right-hander Noah Syndergaard, according to Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports.
Both Rosario and Syndergaard have seen their names pop up in trade speculation this offseason. Rosario was already reported to be a desired piece in return for Realmuto but the Mets have appeared reluctant to include him, especially since he's under team control until 2024.
The infielder turned 23 in November and is coming off his first full season at the major-league level. His campaign as a whole was a little underwhelming but he finished strong, hitting .285/.318/.413 with five home runs, 10 doubles, and 15 stolen bases from the beginning of August through the end of the season.
Syndergaard has been more actively theorized as a potential trade chip and was reportedly discussed Monday in a possible three-team trade between the Mets, Marlins, and New York Yankees; that deal would supposedly send him to the Bronx with Realmuto landing in Queens. As of Tuesday afternoon, the rumoured transaction was not progressing, sources told Jon Morosi of MLB Network.
While nothing is set in stone, the Mets appear to have emerged as the clear front-runner for Realmuto.
