Report: Phillies eyeing Happ after missing out on Corbin

The Philadelphia Phillies are changing gears now that their first-choice free-agent starter is off the market, turning their attention to southpaw J.A. Happ, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.

Philadelphia was one of the top suitors for left-hander Patrick Corbin before he reportedly signed a six-year, $140-million contract with the Washington Nationals on Tuesday.

Happ, meanwhile, went 17-6 with a 3.65 ERA across 31 starts between the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees in 2018, making his first All-Star team in the process.

If he signed with Philadelphia, Happ, 36, would return to the team that selected him in the third round of the 2004 amateur draft, and where he spent parts of four seasons before being traded to the Houston Astros in 2010.

As a member of the Phillies, Happ went 14-5 with a 3.11 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 217 innings, and finished second in Rookie of the Year voting in 2009.
