The Los Angeles Angels are exploring both starting and relief pitcher options and have expressed interest in signing free-agent left-hander J.A. Happ and righty Nathan Eovaldi, sources told Jon Morosi of MLB Network.
While the Angels are active in the market, Morosi also noted that it's unclear whether they are likely to sign either.
Happ, 36, posted a 3.65 ERA and 3.98 FIP over 177 2/3 innings between the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees last season. The veteran southpaw is coming off of a three-year, $36-million deal.
The 28-year-old Eovaldi is coming off of a resurgent campaign following two Tommy John surgeries. Starting the season with the Tampa Bay Rays before being traded to the Boston Red Sox for their World Series run, Eovaldi authored a 3.81 ERA and 3.60 FIP over 111 regular season innings. He helped his value in October, posting a remarkable 1.61 ERA and 2.71 FIP over 22 1/3 postseason frames.
Los Angeles was middle-of-the-pack by ERA among American League teams, ranking eighth with a 4.15 ERA as a team. Only one starter threw more than 130 innings in the Angels rotation, with Andrew Heaney owning a 4.15 ERA and 3.99 FIP over 180 frames. The Angels relied on 16 total pitchers to make at least one start in 2018.
