David Wright is scheduled to start at third base for the New York Mets on Sept. 29 for the first time since 2016. That doesn't mean he won't see any game action before then, though.

Mets manager Mickey Callaway said Friday that Wright could be used as a pinch hitter in games leading up to the team's final home series of the campaign.

The Mets plan on activating Wright from the disabled list on Sept. 25 ahead of a series against the Atlanta Braves. And while he could draw an at-bat or two, it's unlikely he'll play defense outside of his final start against the Miami Marlins.

The veteran infielder has battled multiple injuries for the last several years, including spinal stenosis. The ailments have limited him to just 75 regular-season games since the beginning of 2015.

In a press conference on Thursday, though he didn't specifically discuss retirement, he said his health was unlikely to improve and a return to the field beyond 2018 doesn't seem possible.
