Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Sean Manaea will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder Sept. 19, the team announced Tuesday. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Neil ElAttrache in Los Angeles.
While the team will announce a specific timeline for the left-hander after the procedure, manager Bob Melvin expects Manaea to be out through the 2019 season, according to Jane Lee of MLB.com.
Manaea last pitched on Aug. 24 against the Minnesota Twins and was already considered a long shot to play again this season after being diagnosed with rotator cuff tendinitis.
In 27 starts, Manaea went 12-9 with a 3.59 ERA over 160 2 /3 innings. While his strikeouts were down (6.05 K/9), he notably improved his walk rate from 3.12 BB/9 in 2017 to 1.79 this season.
On April 21, he became the seventh A's pitcher to throw a no-hitter when he stymied the potent Boston Red Sox over nine innings.
