Tensions boiled over in the Seattle Mariners' locker room Tuesday resulting in a heated, closed-door confrontation between players.

Dee Gordon asked the media present to leave the clubhouse, and the scuffle began shortly thereafter, according to David Gottlieb of MLB.com.

The altercation took place between Gordon and shortstop Jean Segura, sources told Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times. it reportedly stemmed from a misplay in center field by Gordon during Monday's win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Several players including Cameron Maybin, Mike Zunino, Nick Vincent, and Robinson Cano were seen trying to break up the quarrel.

"I don't want to talk about it," Cano said following the Mariners' 5-3 loss to Baltimore when asked about the incident, according to Divish. "What happens in here, stays in here. Everybody's good."

Mariners manager Scott Servais chalked it up to competitiveness reaching a fever pitch. Servais said that his role is to "listen" to his players in the aftermath.

Servais has been the Mariners' manager since 2016 and played in the big leagues from 1991 through 2001. This occurrence is hardly anything new in his eyes.

"You're talking about 25, or now in this case now 35, of the most competitive guys you're ever gonna be around and you spend basically every waking moment together all the time. I've been on a number of different teams, it's something that you will see at some point," Servais told Gottlieb.

He continued: "I played for 11 years in the big leagues, it's almost every year. Every year, every team that I've ever been a part of. And sometimes it'll bring teams together. Sometimes certain things hit a boiling point and you gotta get something off your chest and you go from there."

At 77-61, the Mariners remain in the hunt for a postseason berth, but they trail the division rival Oakland Athletics by 5 1/2 games for the second wild-card spot entering Tuesday's action.
