Second baseman Brandon Phillips will make his return to the big leagues after nearly a full calendar year. The Boston Red Sox will recall the three-time All-Star from Triple-A on Tuesday, according to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic.
Manager Alex Cora said Phillips can bring a good clubhouse presence, and the veteran knows his playing time will be limited because of Boston's already crowded infield.
The 37-year-old signed a minor-league deal with the Red Sox in late June after failing to land a contract in the offseason. He's shown he can still hit, at least in the minors, where Phillips posted a .302/.348/.477 slash line with four home runs and 29 runs scored in 38 games.
He won't be eligible to play in the postseason, however, as Phillips wasn't added to the 40-man roster before Aug. 31.
Third baseman Rafael Devers will also rejoin the Red Sox on Tuesday. Devers has been out since Aug. 15 due to a hamstring injury.
