Things couldn't have gone much worse for Jay Bruce this season.
The veteran slugger is hitting just .212/.292/.321 with three home runs in 62 games with the New York Mets and has been sidelined since mid-June with a right hip injury.
"It sucks," Bruce told Mike Puma of the New York Post. "I feel like I let the team down, let people down. But we have underperformed as a team and we have gotten injured. But I think there are definitely greener pastures on the horizon for sure. We have a good team, man. We really do."
Bruce was considered one of the best value signings of the offseason when he inked a three-year, $39-million deal in January. He was coming off a season in which he belted a career-high 36 homers in addition to slashing .254/.324/.508, and was a part of the spending splurge by the Mets' front office.
Despite a down year for Bruce and the team, he remains optimistic as he nears a return back from the disabled list.
"I feel like I change the team to the positive," Bruce said. "Everybody saw me last year and you can kind of look at my career and see that’s the type of player that I am. I truly believe that."
