The Washington Nationals officially signed right-handed reliever Greg Holland to a major-league contract.
The two sides reportedly agreed to terms over the weekend, though no deal was announced until Tuesday morning.
Holland was released by the St. Louis Cardinals in July after a disastrous campaign in which he posted a 7.92 ERA across 25 innings. The Cardinals signed him to a one-year, $14-million contract on Opening Day in hopes that he would serve as their closer. He didn't record a single save with the club.
Holland will slot into a depleted Nationals bullpen that has been without closer Sean Doolittle due to a foot injury, in addition to trading away Shawn Kelley and Brandon Kintzler.
The three-time All-Star was once one of baseball's premier relievers. He was especially sharp from 2013-2014, when he posted a 1.32 ERA with 93 saves in 129 1/3 innings with the Kansas City Royals. He missed all of 2016 after Tommy John surgery before resurrecting his career with the Colorado Rockies in 2017, leading the National League with 41 saves.
