The Washington Nationals have reportedly agreed to a deal with free-agent reliever Greg Holland, according to Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports.
Holland joins a depleted Nationals bullpen that recently traded Brandon Kintzler and Shawn Kelley, two of the team's right-handed relief options.
He's not expected to be used in high-leverage situations initially, according to Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post.
Holland signed a one-year, $14-million deal with the St. Louis Cardinals on Opening Day to serve as the team's closer, but that role never materialized. He struggled throughout his tenure in St. Louis (7.92 ERA) before being designated for assignment in late July.
In 2017, Holland showed he could be a bullpen's workhorse after missing the previous season due to Tommy John surgery. He posted a 3.61 ERA while successfully converting 41 save opportunities across 57 1/3 innings with the Colorado Rockies.
