Right-hander Tyson Ross has been claimed off waivers by the St. Louis Cardinals and will join his new team for their next series in Miami.

Earlier on Sunday, it was reported by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic that the San Diego Padres placed the pitcher on revocable waivers, and that the club had just over 48 hours to either broker a trade with the mystery team that claimed him, pull back the waiver claim, or allow the right-hander to leave in exchange for nothing. With news that the Cardinals claimed Ross off waivers, the Padres opted for the last option, allowing the starter to leave for no return.
Following Tuesday's non-waiver trade deadline, in order for teams to broker deals, players must be placed on revocable waivers. If the player clears, the team is free to negotiate with the 29 other teams, as the Detroit Tigers notably did last year by sending Justin Verlander to the Houston Astros.
Waiver claims prioritize league, meaning National League clubs had a chance to claim Ross before American League teams.
Ross, 31, is set for free agency this winter, and is due approximately $500,000 over the remaining two months of the season, per Rosenthal. Over 123 1/3 innings this year, Ross owns a 4.45 ERA and 4.55 FIP in 22 starts.
