The Cincinnati Reds have placed right-hander Hunter Greene on the disabled list, the team announced on Friday. Their top pitching prospect will miss the remainder of the season with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
Greene will report to the Reds' facility in Goodyear, Arizona to begin his rehab. The team will evaluate him throughout the offseason, hoping he'll be able to avoid surgery.
"Right now, it's rehab," general manager Nick Krall said, according to Eddie Matz of ESPN. "It's not surgical at this point. We're going to evaluate it as we move through the offseason, and go from there."
The 18-year-old is listed as the Reds' second-best prospect, and the No. 18 prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB Pipeline.
Greene, selected second overall in the 2017 amateur draft, was a two-way player throughout high school before converting to a full-time pitcher with the Reds. He was 3-7 with a 4.48 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 68 1/3 innings at Class A Dayton this season.
