Mere hours after manager Mickey Callaway admitted he was unaware of what Yoenis Cespedes said about his ailing foot, the New York Mets have scheduled an MRI for their star outfielder.
The slugger will also see a specialist early next week, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. This is all coming just one day after Cespedes made his return from the disabled list.
Cespedes was expected to be in the lineup for the entire three-game set against the New York Yankees. However, he was sore after acting as the designated hitter in Friday's opener, and Callaway opted to sit him for Saturday's matinee. It's not likely Cespedes will play in Sunday's finale either after needing an MRI.
Friday night Cespedes said he could need major foot surgery to fix calcification in his heel, which would require an 8-10 month recovery time. Before Saturday's game, Callaway said he wasn't given that information.
Callaway stood by the decision the team made to activate Cespedes prior to the game, stating "we thought his heels were in a really good spot coming in or we wouldn't have."
Cespedes has been held to 119 games since signing a four-year, $110-million deal with the Mets prior to the 2017 campaign.
