The New York Yankees' search for a starting pitcher ahead of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline has been extensive, with a new name now entering the mix.

The San Francisco Giants have reportedly let the Yankees front office know that right-hander Jeff Samardzija is available in a deal, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports.

Whether or not Samardzija would be a fit in the Bronx remains to be seen. The 33-year-old has been limited to just nine starts this season and owns a 6.92 ERA and 1.67 WHIP over 40 2/3 innings. He missed all of June with shoulder tightness, but did come off the DL last week, allowing three runs off seven hits in a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Giants are just four games back in the NL West, but they're motivated to trim payroll, and moving Samardzija would help alleviate some of their concerns. He's earning $19.8 million this season and is owed an additional $39.6 million over the following two seasons. San Francisco would likely need to eat a large chunk of the salary to facilitate a deal, or take back another contract.
