The Texas Rangers designated outfielder Austin Jackson for assignment on Wednesday, three days after acquiring him from the San Francisco Giants alongside reliever Cory Gearrin and minor-league right-hander Jason Bahr.
Jackson, 31, never reported to the Rangers at the team's request, according to Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News. It appeared the team might trade him, but no deal has materialized.
The Rangers now have seven days to trade, release, or place Jackson on irrevocable outright waivers.
In 59 games with the Giants, Jackson hit .242/.309/.295 with zero home runs and a pair of stolen bases. With the Rangers sporting a relatively crowded outfield of Shin-Soo Choo, Nomar Mazara, Joey Gallo, and Delino DeShields, there was no realistic place for the veteran center fielder.
Jackson signed a two-year contract in San Francisco in January after a fantastic 85-game stretch with the Cleveland Indians in 2017 where he hit .318/.387/.482 with seven homers and 35 RBIs.
