The Houston Astros will be without Brian McCann for at least four-to-six weeks as the catcher will undergo surgery on his right knee, general manager Jeff Luhnow confirmed Tuesday.
McCann, 34, was placed on the disabled list Tuesday with right knee soreness after the chronic problem flared up again, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Tim Federowicz has been recalled from Triple-A to replace McCann.
McCann's injuries have held him to 50 games this season. He has a .206/.283/.323 slash line with five home runs over 173 plate appearances.
McCann spent the end of May and beginning of June on the disabled list with the same knee injury and, at that time, Max Stassi took the lion's share of work behind the dish. After a hot start, the 27-year-old catcher has cooled off significantly. Following a May where he posted a 1.017 OPS, Stassi's June numbers dropped to a .628 OPS.
The Astros lead the AL West with a 55-31 record, just ahead of the surging Seattle Mariners who are half a game back.
