The St. Louis Cardinals placed ace right-hander Carlos Martinez on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with a right lat strain, the team announced.
St. Louis recalled right-handed reliever Mike Mayers from Triple-A Memphis to replace Martinez on the active roster.
Martinez didn't have his best stuff in his last outing, allowing four runs, two earned, over five innings. He walked three and struck out two.
The National League's ERA leader (1.62) joins fellow rotation arm Adam Wainwright on the disabled list. The Cardinals' rotation is set through the first three contests of a four-game series against the San Diego Padres beginning Thursday night at Petco Park. Sunday's starter remains to be determined.
