Baltimore Orioles infielder Tim Beckham is expected to miss at least six weeks after undergoing core muscle surgery Thursday, according to the club's official website.
Beckham, who has been placed on the 10-disabled list, was diagnosed with a groin strain after exiting Monday's game, and opted for surgery after visiting with a specialist Wednesday in Philadelphia.
"I know initially he really wanted to see if he could get back and get through it," Orioles manager Buck Showalter told Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun on Wednesday. "I think after talking to the doctor and showing the MRI and the looks at it, I think I've got a pretty good feeling on which way he's going to perceive it. That's going to be his decision."
Beckham, acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays ahead of last year's trade deadline, got off to a sluggish start this season, hitting just .179/.247/.262 (44 OPS+) with one home run and 28 strikeouts through his first 23 games.
With Beckham out for the next six-plus weeks, the Orioles will likely have Danny Valencia and Jace Peterson - the latter claimed off waivers from the New York Yankees on Tuesday - split time at third base.
