The Cleveland Indians will move forward with a major void in the back end of their bullpen as the club placed southpaw Andrew Miller on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.
In a corresponding move, the Indians recalled fellow left-hander Jeff Beliveau from Triple-A.
"You don't want to hang 24 guys out to dry for, call it, seven or eight days if you don't have to," Miller told Jordan Bastian of MLB.com. "It's the right thing to do, even if it's not the most desirable thing for me personally."
Miller was forced to leave his relief appearance against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday after only two pitches. He's been excellent so far this season, pitching 10 scoreless innings with 17 strikeouts.
It's an unfortunate setback for the ace of the Indians bullpen after he dealt with a lingering knee injury last season that forced him to endure two separate stints on the disabled list.
Injuries aside, Miller has been his usual impressive self on the mound. Since being acquired by the Indians in 2016, the 32-year-old has been one of the most valuable relievers in all of baseball, with 14.4 K/9, 0.67 HR/9, and a remarkable 5.8 WAR.
Miller, a free agent in 2019, is in the final year ($9 million) of a four-year, $36 million deal he signed with the New York Yankees in 2014.
