The Miami Marlins will be making the trip to Yankee Stadium on Monday for a two-game stopover against the New York Yankees, but one high-profile name will not be joining the team: CEO Derek Jeter.
He's staying behind because it would be "awkward," Jeter told Craig Davis of the Sun-Sentinel.
"It would be an awkward situation for me to actually go to Yankee Stadium," he said. "I’m just being honest with you guys, that’s why I’m not going. I knew it was going to be a story one way or the other, so I might as well get out in front of it and say I’m not going. I will not be there."
Monday will be the first time during the regular season that the Marlins will see former star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton in an opposing lineup after the team traded him in the offseason for Starlin Castro and a pair of minor-leaguers.
It has been a rocky start for Jeter in his first campaign as Marlins CEO. They've opened the season with a 3-9 record and saw the three smallest reported attendance totals (7,003, 6,516, and 6,150) since Marlins Park opened in 2012.
