After a freakish accident at first base in which Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Lorenzo Cain appeared to clip the right ankle of St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Jose Martinez, both players were lifted from Monday's game due to injury.
Cain's left foot clipped Martinez's back leg while the outfielder was legging out a single in the ninth inning. After a brief injury delay, Cain was removed from the game for pinch runner Brent Suter - a pitcher - and then replaced defensively by Brett Phillips.
Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Cain was dealing with a slight quad issue and wants to play on Tuesday, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Meanwhile, Martinez left the game with a right Achilles contusion and was immediately replaced in the lineup by Yairo Munoz, who took over at third base. Matt Carpenter shifted to first.
For the Brewers, losing Cain to injury would be a colossal blow, as Milwaukee just placed Christian Yelich - the club's other notable offseason addition - on the disabled list with an oblique injury.
