Toronto Blue Jays skipper John Gibbons is remaining optimistic that the shoulder issue that's plagued All-Star third baseman Josh Donaldson won't keep him sidelined for long.
Donaldson was placed on the 10-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation Friday and will head to Florida to rehab in hopes that some time off will result in regaining the strength in his shoulder.
"He'll go down there and get on a throwing program," Gibbons said, according to the Associated Press. "Hopefully it's not too long. I don't think it will be."
Donaldson has struggled to throw the ball, and Gibbons acknowledged that the shoulder issue has also begun to impact his ability to hit, which is why the club opted to place him on the DL rather than having him serve as the designated hitter.
In 12 games this season, Donaldson is hitting .239/.352/.457 with three home runs and 14 strikeouts.
