Matt Carpenter was forced to leave Wednesday night's game against the Washington Nationals when the St. Louis Cardinals star was hit on the right hand by a pitch from Matt Grace in the seventh inning.

After exiting, Carpenter underwent X-rays which showed no broken bones. The club announced the first baseman was removed for precautionary reasons.

Patrick Wisdom entered the game as a pinch runner for Carpenter and took over first base in the subsequent frame.

After a slow start, Carpenter has handily taken the lead in the National League MVP race. Coming into Wednesday's action, Carpenter paced the Senior Circuit in home runs, slugging percentage, FanGraphs WAR, and wRC+.
