Report: Giants looking to add pitcher, but trade 'not likely'

Rick Scuteri / USA TODAY Sports

In the wake of losing both Madison Bumgarner and Jeff Samardzija for extended periods due to injury, the San Francisco Giants have been left reeling.

The Giants are reportedly considering the addition of a starting pitcher to fill the void, but a trade is "not likely," a source told Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

This would leave free agency or the waiver wire. Free agency could be a problem as the team is straddling the $197-million luxury-tax threshold and may not be willing to add any more contracts.

If the Giants don't add another starter, they are projected to enter the season with a rotation of Ty Blach, Johnny Cueto, Derek Holland, Chris Stratton, and possibly top pitching prospect Tyler Beede when the need for a fifth arm comes around.
