Report: Royals agree to minor-league deal with Buchholz

Clay Buchholz is back in the American League.

The veteran right-hander reportedly agreed to a minor-league deal with the Kansas City Royals on Monday that will see him earn $1.5 million if he lands on the big-league roster, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports. He can opt out of his deal by May 1 if he's not in the majors.

Buchholz spent the first 10 seasons of his career with the Boston Red Sox before he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies prior to last season. He made just two appearances before suffering a partial tear in the flexor-pronator mass of his right arm that resulted in season-ending surgery.

The 33-year-old has been wildly inconsistent and has battled injuries throughout his career, but has made two All-Star appearances. He posted a 4.78 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and 93 strikeouts in 139 1/3 innings with the Red Sox in 2016 - his last full season in the majors.
