San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks with a fractured left hand after being struck by a line drive in Friday's spring training game against the Kansas City Royals, ESPN's Buster Olney reports.

The start versus the Royals was scheduled to be Bumgarner's final tune-up before the regular season.

"Horrible news for us," Giants manager Bruce Bochy told Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle. "That's all you can say about it. There's nothing you can do but push on."

He will undergo surgery on Saturday to insert pins in the fractured fifth metacarpal of his left hand, according to Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News. Bumgarner said he hopes to have them removed in four-to-six weeks before he begins throwing again.

This is the second major blow to the Giants' projected rotation over the last two days. Right-hander Jeff Samardzija is expected to open the season on the disabled list with a pectoral injury, and is expected to miss up to a month.

It's another hard-luck situation for the Giants and Bumgarner. After making four starts in 2017, Bumgarner sustained shoulder and rib injuries in a dirt biking accident that kept him out of action for nearly three months.

Without Bumgarner or Samardzija in the rotation to open the season, the Giants are left with Johnny Cueto, non-roster invitee Derek Holland, Chris Stratton, and Ty Blach.
