Tebow not surprised after Mets cut him from majors camp
The New York Mets have put an end to Tim Tebow's major-league spring training camp.
Tebow was among six players reassigned to minor-league camp Tuesday after appearing in seven Grapefruit League games.
"It's not like it’s a shock," Tebow told reporters, according to Tim Healey of Newsday. "They were super honest the whole time. We have great relationships and conversations. It's not like, oh my gosh. So it's all good."
A full participant in major-league camp since signing with the Mets in 2016, Tebow had his start delayed by an ankle injury suffered after stepping on a sprinkler head. When he did get into games, he went 1-for-18 with one walk and 11 strikeouts.
"(It was) unfortunate that I couldn't do as much because of my ankle which was disappointing, but I got to put in a lot of good work and I feel like I am improving," Tebow said.
Despite the demotion, Tebow could still get called back up to appear in additional spring training games. The former Heisman Trophy winner said he really enjoyed the experience this spring and will take the advice he received back to the minors in hopes of one day reaching the majors.
"Continue to work in all the areas we've been working and making progress," Tebow said. "That's really the focus to continue the process and the journey and just keep working.
"(Reaching the majors is) definitely the goal. Putting in work every day and hopefully one day you get that opportunity but you can't be focused just on the end result, it's every day working on the process, looking at the film. It's just having a long-term mindset with a here and now focus."
