The Detroit Tigers have released left-handed reliever Travis Wood after he tore his ACL in a spring training game last Thursday, the team announced.
The Tigers signed Wood to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training, but his time with the club was cut short when he suffered the injury after slipping on grass during a rundown.
Wood, 31, is expected to miss the entire season recovering from surgery.
The southpaw struggled in 2017, posting a 6.80 ERA over 94 innings with the Kansas City Royals and San Diego Padres, bouncing between the bullpen and starting rotation.
Prior to that, however, Wood spent five relatively productive seasons with the Chicago Cubs, going 32-42 with a 3.94 ERA over 691 1/3 innings. He made the National League All-Star team in 2013 when he started 32 games.
