With the Toronto Blue Jays looking to bolster their pitching staff, Andrew Cashner is emerging as a candidate for the back end of the rotation.
The Blue Jays are showing continued interest in signing the 31-year-old right-hander and other veteran free-agent pitchers, according to MLB Network's Jon Morosi, who added that the team is looking to land a starter on a one-year contract.
Cashner is coming off his best statistical season in years. Over 28 starts with the Texas Rangers, he went 11-11 with a 3.40 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. He did, however, post the lowest strikeout rate of his eight-year career, fanning only 4.6 batters per nine innings.
He would likely fit in as the Blue Jays' fifth starter behind Marcus Stroman, J.A. Happ, Marco Estrada, and Aaron Sanchez.
The market has been relatively quiet for Cashner, although the Baltimore Orioles reportedly met with him in early January.
